ASTM F1554
Overview
Definition: Standard Specification for Anchor Bolts, Steel, 36, 55, and 105 KSI Yield Strength
ASTM F1554 is an Anchor Bolt / Rod specification governed by the American Society for Testing and Materials, (ASTM). This specification covers straight, bent, headed, and headless Anchor Bolts. All Thread Rod is also included in this standard.
Threaded Rod to this standard is intended for anchoring structural supports to concrete foundations. This standard replaced ASTM A307 Grade C and has expanded its scope to cover 3 grades defined by the intended minimum Yield Requirements of 36 KSI, 55 KSI, and 105 KSI.
What separates this standard from ASTM A307 are the mechanical requirements, specifically the Tensile range and Minimum Yield Strength. With these specified values, engineers can understand and calculate the hold down requirements for their designed purposes.
The importance of Tensile and Yield Strength, for the embedment into concrete, can clearly be understood by their definitions:
Tensile Strength: The tensile strength of a material is the maximum amount of stress that it can take before failure (breaking).
Yield Strength: The stress a material can withstand without permanent deformation.
